Student Swine Cooperative (SSC)

What is SSC?
The Student Swine Cooperative (SSC) is an Animal Sciences Club at Washington State University that owns and manages a small herd of pigs at the WSU Swine Center. The students involved in this club are responsible for all management and financial decisions from farrow to finish. SSC is a chance for students to learn what the modern swine industry has to offer. The members make the management decisions on the animals and take the consequences as they come. This club gives students skills and practical experience in livestock management and decision making. Students involved in SSC are eligible for AS 399 credits for their membership, usually two for one semester or one for each semester of the fall/spring semesters. The members meet once a week to discuss the past week's events and also the upcoming week's events or reminders. Decisions made by the group are based upon reports from an appointed herdsman, plus recommendations from an advisory committee. The members of the club meet with this advisory committee once a year to discuss the ups and downs of the operation and to give presentations to the advisory board on worldwide current events pertaining to the swine industry. This committee also advises the club on how to improve the current herd. With this information and advise from club advisors Chris Hostetler and Ace Timm, SSC can determine the best way to raise and manage a successful herd.

SSC Goals

1. To provide practical hands-on experience in actual management situations for students who are interested in swine production and animal sciences.

2. To manage a sow herd for teaching purposes and producing hogs for market.

3. To create a continuous, profit-making cooperative.

4. To create better student awareness and interest in the field of Animal Sciences.

Emily would like to remind everyone that tours of the facility need to be authorized by Dr. Newberry and okayed by Swine Center staff working the day of the tour.

Our gilt and sow have been AI. The company we receive our boar semen from sent the wrong order. Instead of semen from Super Duty and Monkey Business we were sent semen from Super Duty and Brut.
