Outstanding Masters Student

Kyle Caires

Kyle Caires

The Outstanding Masters Student for 2006-2007 is Mr. Kyle Caires. Kyle works with Dr. Derek McLean and will defend his masters thesis, entitled "Roles for Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Bovine Testis Development", this spring. Kyle was nominated for this award because of his dedication to the department, outstanding teaching skills, strong work ethic and skills as a researcher. As a researcher, Kyle studies the scientific literature, has taken rigorous classes that challenge him and stimulate his interest in science and uses this knowledge to develop creative approaches to investigate biologically important factors regulating spermatogenesis in bulls and boars. As a teacher, Kyle works hard to prepare interesting and challenging laboratories for our undergraduate classes. His teaching evaluations are always excellent and he is well liked and respected by the students in his laboratories. Kyle is also actively involved in departmental functions. as well. He participated in Lamb 300, works with Dr. McLean to recruit high school students during Junior Preview, and has been involved in other outreach activities. Kyle plans to continue his work in Dr. McLean’s laboratory to earn a Ph.D. degree.

Outstanding Ph.D. Student

Ragen Trudelle-Schwarz McGowan

The Outstanding Ph.D. Student for 2006-2007 is Ms. Ragen Trudelle-Schwarz McGowan. Ragen is studying animal behavior with Dr. Ruth Newberry and will defend her dissertation entitled “Unraveling the Behavioral Mechanisms Underlying Contrafreeloading” this summer. Her work has included studies with mice, chickens and grizzly bears and has been presented at several international conferences and should result in three publications in high quality journals. As a teacher, Ragen has excelled as evidenced by the two GPSA teaching awards from the WSU Graduate and Professional Students Association as well as a 2006 Graduate Student teaching award from the 2006 North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture Graduate Student teaching award. She is extremely dedicated to being an effective teacher and serves as a role model for our undergraduates. Ragen also contributes to the university in her role as Chair of the Governing Board for University Recreation, and has served the department as President of the Animal Sciences Graduate Student Association in 2005 and as a member of the department’s Graduate Committee. Ragen’s leadership skills were recognized in 2005 with a WSU President’s Leadership Award. To quote the letter of nomination “Ragen is an outstanding doctoral student who excels in academic performance, research and scholarship, teaching, and overall promise of future professional leadership.”
