Welcome to the Department of Animal Sciences.

We are pleased that you have taken the time to visit us on-line and hope that you find the information you are seeking.  The Department of Animal Sciences at Washington State University offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs, has active extension programs, and conducts excellent fundamental and applied research that benefits many segments of society.

The field of animal sciences encompasses a variety of scientific disciplines that explain the functioning of the biological systems of livestock and other animal species.  Our field applies this scientific base to the production and management of animals and further includes the study of animal behavior, well-being and the art of animal husbandry.  Products resulting from the care and management of livestock (meat, milk and fiber) are integral components of the field of Animal sciences.  In addition, other important animal contributions to society include:  recreation (horseback riding, fishing), companionship and therapy (dogs, cats, horses), and biomedical research that benefits animals (many species) and man.

Our ability to study the biological systems at the molecular and cellular levels furthers our understanding of the functioning of all aspects of animal life.  Many of these discoveries open the door to further application in human health and well-being.  Research in the animal sciences has contributed to the increased efficiency with which livestock convert feedstuffs to meat, milk and fiber to supply a growing world population.  This efficiency is attributed to discoveries in many scientific disciplines including nutrition, growth, genetics, and reproduction.  Production of animals to meet the needs and wants of society today and tomorrow must employ practices that are economically, environmentally and socially sound and acceptable.  Understanding the inputs and outcomes of all segments of the production systems involved help identify sustainable production practices for our diverse animal enterprises.

The field of animal sciences offers many rewarding and challenging career options while making diverse and meaningful contributions to society.  We welcome your interest in our department and hope that you explore all this field and our department have to offer.  Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you desire more information.
