Instructor Message: Welcome to Principles of Companion Animal Nutrition for SPRING Semester 2008. I hope you enjoy learning in this class.

This website will have occasional updates and announcements from me.

You should check this website fairly often, certainly every week.

I will let you know in class if there is something specific you need to look up here. I will also tell you in class when you need to pick up assignments here, what the file name is, etc.

I will not be handing out very much paper (after day 1!). All the handouts and background materials will be found here in the tables below. They are all read-only, downloadable files that you can save on your own computer or print from any computer in the world.

Feel free to email me at any time, I will usually answer within the day or early the next morning. In order to manage my time as effectively as possible and to provide you with the most help, some basic email management must be followed. On the SUBJECT HEADING of the email you MUST include your LAST NAME and SUBJECT. If you just send 'AS 205 Question', for example, I'll have 15 of them and the system will just erase them all.

* If you do not use this format I will not be able to see the email. If you are submitting an assignment by email (which will be rare), you MUST include your LAST NAME, date, and the assignment title. * NOTE WELL: Do not attempt to use email to try to excuse a class after noon on the day of the class. See attendance policies above.

LAPTOPS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN LECTURE. My only exception will be, that if you must use a laptop, you must ask my permission and sit in the front two rows. If I am walking around the room, and you put your laptop screen down that is cause for immediate assignment of an unexcused absence for that day. ATTENDENCE IS EXPECTED, REQUIRED, CHECKED AND GRADED.
ATTENDENCE POLICY. Participation in your education is a minimal expectation of a university student. Occasionally, illness or some other life event prevents an attendance. Anything that results in missing more than two classes must be regarded as an illness or emergency requiring responsible action on the students part, such as a medical checkup, hospitalization, notification of a family emergency or the like.
This is not me being mean. This is for your own help, based on my and others, 25 years of advising students. If you are missing classes, get help.
If you are sick for more than 1 or 2 days, seek help. If you have a family emergency, notify me. I am not here to make your life miserable, but to help you with priorities and time management.
I will excuse no more than two absences, with prior notification, before your grade will be decreased. You can expect to lose 5 % points for each unexcused absence. For example, you miss two classes unexcused, you can not earn an A. Miss 4 and you are down to a C. If you miss 6, you better withdraw, because you will be failed.

YOU MUST EITHER CALL 335 4113 OR SEND AN EMAIL BEFORE 9 AM THE DAY OF CLASS FOR A VALID EXCUSE-UP TO TWO CLASSES PER SEMESTER. IF SOMETHING SUDDEN STRIKES AND YOU MISS CLASS WITHOUT THIS PRIOR COMMUNICATION, YOU MUST PROVIDE WRITTEN DOCUMENTED PROOF (MEDICAL, LEGAL, ETC) FOR THIS TO BE AN EXCUSED ABSENCE.

Please note this well: If you come up to me, call me, email me or write me a letter, that in any way shape or form says/means/conveys: "I missed class, did I miss anything, what did we do, etc?" I will dock you 5% points on your final course grade.

Tips for Academic Success!

1. Read the book ahead of the class period.

2. Come to class, each day.

3. Participate in class, ask and answer questions, don't be shy.

4. Take notes, but do not be concerned about writing down every word.

I will stress the key points in class. If you read the book ahead of time, you will be able to take notes easily as we bring out the key issues.

When I am in class, I always look around the room, and move on to the next slide when 70 to 80 % of the students are done writing. If you are having a hard time keeping up, see me about tips for note-taking.

5. Read your notes after class every day, preferably the same day if you can. If you have any questions, confusing points or missing points, try to find them in the book, then ask me in the next class.

6. Study for the exams ahead of time. If you read the book, come to class, take simple notes, study your notes and review regularly, you will do well on the exams.

7. ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS THE DUE DATE. LATE ASSIGNMENTS LOSE 30 % PER DAY, THEY ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTABLE AFTER THE NEXT CLASS OR THREE WORKING DAYS. THAT IS, YOU MISS AN ASSIGNMENT ON TUESDAY AND HAND IT IN ON THURSDAY, YOU HAVE ALREADY LOST 60%. AFTER THURSDAY AT 2:20 IT IS NO LONGER ACCEPTABLE. IF YOU MISS AN ASSIGNMENT DUE ON A THURSDAY, YOU MAY HAND IT IN FRIDAY AND LOSE 30 %. BY THE FOLLOWING TUESDAY IT IS WORTHLESS. PLAN AHEAD, NOW!

TEXTBOOK INFORMATION

The textbook is Principles of Companion Animal Nutrition, by McNamara (me). It is available at Crimson & Gray, The Bookie and on line at www.prenhall.com; or amazon, et al.

PLEASE BUY IT AND USE IT!! It was written to be an integral part of the class.

I have set it up especially to help students in this class and in others, it is an integral part of the course.

And for the skeptical and/or legal minded, I receive no royalties from WSU students enrolled in this class that purchase the book. That money is donated back to the Department of Animal Sciences to help our companion animal programs (and it ain't much, anyway!).
