Background Information
Instructor Message: Course will meet Tuesday, August 21st 2007 in Clark 147. There will be a lab that day from 2 to 5.
Students study and apply principles of management, nutrition, breeding, behavior, and financial aspects of care and companionship of dogs, cats, fish, horses, birds, rodents, and reptiles kept as companion animals.. They will solve practical problems of care and management of these species.
This course will build on your present background in biology, anatomy, genetics, physiology and nutrition. I expect you to have a working knowledge of the material covered in the prerequisites to this course. The format of this course is designed so that you learn about and solve practical problems using up to date research information presented in class mixed with my own and group practical experience. The primary purpose is so that you obtain a working ability to recognize, analyze and solve problems of animal nutrition now and in the future. The course is designed to help you with what you need to learn, and also with how you need to apply what you have already learned and will learn in future. Therefore, this course is a mix of discussions and labs with a minimum of lectures.
Classes will be a discussion & examination of the topic to give depth of knowledge, not a uni-directional lecture. Therefore, your preparation for the small time we will spend in class is important. Outside references and reading will be from texts, manuals and scientific literature.
It is your responsibility to prepare for class by reading and thinking about the assigned material on time. All of the grade in this class will be based on your performance in classes, laboratories and in assignments. This is a Writing-in-the-Major class so good written communication will be stressed.
Course: AS464 (406) - Companion Animal Management 3 (2-3) Prereq course in nutrition; course in statistics; Biol 102, 106, or 107. Care and management of companion animal species throughout the life cycle, including nutrition, reproduction, exercise and behavior. Cooperative course taught by WSU, open to UI students (AVS 464).
Course not offered during current semester.
