Research Overview:
My original research appointment (in 1985) was as an animal growth biologist/cell biologist, with an emphasis on skeletal muscle (tissue) growth and development. My present research interests are: regulation of mature fat cell dedifferentiation in beef cattle and pigs, regulation of myogenic satellite cell proliferation and differentiation, and the intercellular communication between muscle and fat cells. Application of knowledge gained by my laboratory will lead to new procedures to regulate carcass composition in domestic (meat) animals, alleviate problems associated with obesity, provide new cells for tissue engineering applications, and help counteract dysfunctions such as diabetes.
